Attack angle moves it more than speed
Static loft is what is stamped on the head. Dynamic loft is what the ball actually experiences at impact, and the difference between them is attack angle.
Swing down on the ball and you deliver less loft than the head has. Swing up and you deliver more. The head does not know what your swing is doing; it only knows where the face is pointing when it arrives.

Which one are you?
Most golfers who came to the driver from irons hit down on it, because that is what every other club in the bag requires. Some tells:
- The tee. If your tee is knocked flat or fires forward, you are hitting down. If it stays roughly upright, you are level or up.
- Ball position. Anything at or behind the centre of your stance almost guarantees a downward strike.
- The mark on the face. Low on the face, consistently, with a driver usually means a descending blow.
- Spin. High spin with a low launch is the classic hitting-down signature, and it is the worst combination for carry.
Changing the attack angle is worth more than changing the loft
If you can move from four degrees down to level, you gain launch angle and lose spin at the same time — the two changes that both add carry. Tee the ball higher, move it forward to the inside of your lead heel, and set your sternum behind it. That costs nothing. Why a slower swing needs more loft, not less covers the same mechanism from the other direction.
The launch window you are aiming at
Loft is a means. What you are actually trying to produce at 90 mph is:
- Launch angle 13–16°. Higher than a tour player's, because you have less ball speed to keep the ball airborne.
- Spin 2400–3000 rpm. Also higher than a tour player's, and for the same reason — the spin is part of what holds the ball up.
- Ball speed around 130.5 mph. Governed by strike quality, not by loft.
Golfers at 90 mph consistently chase the tour numbers — 12 degrees of launch at 2200 rpm — and lose carry doing it. Those numbers are correct at 115 mph of clubhead speed. At 90 they produce a flat shot that falls out of the air.
Finding it with an adjustable hosel

Work downward rather than upward. Start at the top of your window, take an average over ten balls, drop one setting, repeat, and stop when the average carry falls. One trap: on most drivers, adding loft also closes the face. If the higher-lofted setting starts producing a left miss, do not conclude the loft is wrong. When the problem is spin, not loft
Two flights look like a loft problem and are not.
High launch with high spin
The ball climbs, hangs, and falls short. Reducing loft will help, but the underlying cause is usually a shaft that is too soft for your transition, an excessively downward attack angle, or a strike high on the face. Fix those first — see whether your shaft flex matches your transition .
Low launch with high spin
The worst combination in golf, and the classic signature of hitting sharply down on the ball. Adding loft treats the symptom. Changing where the club bottoms out treats the cause, and it is free.
A fitted old driver against an unfitted new one
This is the decision most 90 mph golfers are actually making, usually without framing it that way. Somewhere between four hundred and six hundred dollars is about to be spent, and it can go on a current-model head at whatever loft the shop has, or on a three-year-old head at exactly the right loft with the right shaft in it.
The honest comparison, in yards:
- Three model years of driver head development: a few yards, at best, and most of it in forgiveness on off-centre strikes rather than in centre-strike ball speed. Driver faces have been at the legal limit for a long time.

- A shaft that suits your transition: hard to quantify in yards, but it shows up as a narrower dispersion, which is worth more strokes than either of the above.

Draw bias is a separate decision
Once the loft is settled, the remaining head choice is face angle and weighting. A draw-biased head helps if your miss is genuinely a slice; it hurts if your miss is already left. Set the loft from the numbers, then pick the bias from your actual miss pattern.
What to shop for
Buy by loft, and buy adjustable if you can. A head with an adjustable hosel within two degrees of your window is a candidate; a fixed head needs to be inside the window itself.
