Shaft Specifications: Flex and Weight

Flex is not a standard. There is no industry body defining what S means, so a stiff shaft from one manufacturer can measure softer than a regular from another. That is why the honest answer to a flex question is a starting point plus the reasoning, not a single letter — and why weight, which almost nobody is fitted for, often matters more.

Your shaft flex and weight

Enter your driver speed and how hard you change direction at the top. Transition loads a shaft far more than the speed figure suggests.

Driver swing speed

Clubhead speed with the driver. Most male amateurs are 85–100 mph.

Transition

How hard you change direction at the top — not how fast you swing.

Specifications do not work in isolation. A driver loft that suits your speed is the wrong loft if your attack angle is steeply negative, and a wedge ladder is only correct relative to the pitching wedge above it.
