Specification questions

What loft driver should I use for a 90 mph swing speed?

At 90 mph the window is roughly 10.5 to 12 degrees. Below about 95 mph you do not have the ball speed to carry a flat, low-spin flight, so loft is what keeps the ball in the air long enough to carry. Attack angle then moves the answer further than swing speed does: hitting 4 degrees down needs about 2 degrees more static loft than hitting level.

What shaft flex do I need for a 95 mph swing speed?

Stiff, but only just — 95 mph sits about two mph inside the stiff band, so the call is genuinely close. A hard transition pushes it firmly to stiff; a smooth one makes regular defensible at the same speed. Flex is not standardised between manufacturers either, so a stiff shaft from one brand can measure softer than a regular from another.

What degree wedges do I need with my irons?

It depends entirely on the loft of your pitching wedge, which runs anywhere from about 43 to 48 degrees across modern sets. With a 43-degree pitching wedge, 48 / 54 / 60 keeps the ladder even. With a 47-degree pitching wedge, 52 / 58 works with only two wedges. Using the same setup for both leaves a gap of about nine degrees, or 24 yards.

Why does a slower swing speed need more driver loft, not less?

Because carry comes from ball speed, launch angle and spin together, and a slower swing has no ball speed to spare. A low-launch flight only works when the ball is moving fast enough to stay airborne on a shallow trajectory. Below about 95 mph the ball needs launch angle simply to stay up long enough to carry, so loft buys distance rather than costing it.

Is height enough to work out my lie angle?

No, and this is the most common fitting error made online. Lie angle depends on the relationship between your height and your wrist-to-floor measurement, not on height alone. Two golfers who are both six feet tall but whose wrist-to-floor figures differ by three inches need lie angles about three degrees apart — one flat of standard, one upright.

How far should my ball speed carry?

Roughly two yards per mph of ball speed with a driver at typical launch conditions. 110 mph carries about 160 yards, 139 mph about 218, and 167 mph about 277 — those last two are close to LPGA and PGA Tour averages. Optimising launch angle and spin is worth another four to six per cent on top of whatever you currently get.

Do you test the clubs you write about?

No. No launch monitor is owned here and no club has been tested. Every specification comes from a manufacturer specification table, and every relationship used in the calculations comes from published fitting or launch-condition research. There are no first-hand test results anywhere on this site and no reviews or ratings of any kind.

Where do the iron set specifications come from?

Manufacturers' own published specification tables. The database currently holds 201 sets from 16 brands covering 2016 to 2025. Each set carries a status showing whether its figures have been re-confirmed against the manufacturer's table and when, and that status is shown to you in the tool output rather than hidden.

Do the tools send my measurements anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs inside your own browser and makes no network request. There is no account and no server that receives your swing speed, height or wrist-to-floor figure. Your entries are kept in your browser’s local storage on your own device so a second visit does not ask twice, and nothing about you is ever added to an outbound retailer link.

Why do the retailer links search for a spec instead of a product?

Because used clubs are one-of-one items that sell within days. A link to a single listing is dead within a week; a search for "driver 10.5 degree stiff flex" never expires, and the retailer handles availability. It also keeps the recommendation honest — the specification is calculated before any retailer is involved.

How does this site make money?

Should I still get a professional fitting?

If you can, yes — a static fit and a dynamic fit answer different questions. What this site gives you is the right starting point: the head, the shaft category and the build sheet to shop for, which is what stops you buying a 9-degree driver at 82 mph. A lie board and impact tape then settle the last degree of lie, and a launch monitor settles spin.

How to measure wrist-to-floor (30 seconds)
  1. Stand up straight on a hard floor in the shoes you play in.
  2. Let both arms hang loose at your sides. Do not reach down.
  3. Measure from the crease at the base of your palm — where your hand meets your wrist — straight down to the floor.
  4. Have someone else read the tape. Reaching for it changes the number.
