What Loft Fairway Wood Closes the Gap Above Your Irons?
Four to five degrees stronger than the longest club you actually hit into a green. For most golfers with a modern iron set that is a 16 to 18-degree fairway wood — a 4-wood or a strong 5-wood, not the 15-degree 3-wood almost everybody buys by default and then cannot launch off the turf.
The gap above your irons is the least examined part of the bag. Pick your set and the longest iron you genuinely use, and the loft falls out of your own ladder.
Your fairway wood loft
The answer depends on where your irons stop, which depends on your set's lofts.
Why the default 3-wood is usually wrong
Almost every golfer buys a 3-wood, and most of them do it without deciding to. It comes in the starter set, it is the second club on the shelf, and the number sits reassuringly next to the driver.
A 3-wood is about 15 degrees. That is a small amount of loft on a club with a 43-inch shaft, and getting it airborne from a fairway lie takes real clubhead speed and a very clean strike. Ask any golfer with a 3-wood in the bag how many times a round they hit it off the deck and the honest answer is often zero.
A 3-wood you only hit off a tee is not a fairway wood. It is a second tee club with a yardage hole underneath it.
Meanwhile the gap it was supposed to fill has grown. Iron lofts have strengthened by four or five degrees over twenty years, which pulled the long irons down with them. A strong-lofted set now has a 5-iron at about 21.5° and a 4-iron at about 18.5°. The distance from there to a 15-degree 3-wood is not one step. It is two.

Not one of those three golfers should be carrying a standard 3-wood as their only fairway wood, and all three of them probably are.
The clubs nobody buys
- The 4-wood, 16–17°. The most under-bought club in golf. It sits exactly in the gap a strengthened iron set opens up, is far easier to launch off turf than a 3-wood, and gives up perhaps five yards off a tee. It sells poorly because the number is unfamiliar.
- The 7-wood, 21–22°. Long treated as a club for golfers who cannot hit anything else, and now appearing on tour precisely because it lands steeply enough to hold a green from 200 yards. If your longest iron is a 6-iron, this is your club.
- The strong 5-wood, 17.5–18°. Effectively a 4-wood with a more acceptable number on it, which tells you something about how these clubs are actually chosen.
The off-the-deck test
Before deciding what to buy, find out whether your current fairway wood is doing anything. This takes ten balls and a fairway lie.
- From a normal fairway lie — not a perfect one, and not a tee — hit ten shots with the fairway wood you carry.
- Count how many got properly airborne. Not made contact: reached a height you would be happy to hit into a green with.
- If fewer than five out of ten did, the club has too little loft for you off the turf.
- Repeat the count for the club you are considering. Two or three extra degrees changes this more than golfers expect.
The honest fix is loft, not practice
Golfers who cannot launch a 3-wood almost always conclude they need to practise it. Sometimes that is true. More often the club has three degrees less loft than their clubhead speed can support, and no amount of practice changes the physics. The 4-wood is not a compromise — it is the correct club.
The tee club problem
There is one legitimate reason to carry a 3-wood you cannot hit off the deck: you need a club off the tee on holes where a driver brings trouble into play, and you want it to go a long way.
That is a real requirement, and worth being deliberate about rather than accidental. If the 3-wood is genuinely a tee club, then something else has to cover the gap from your longest iron upward — usually a hybrid. See which iron a hybrid actually replaces for where that lands in your set.
Before committing a slot to a dedicated tee club, check the arithmetic. If your driver carries 230 and your 3-wood carries 215, you are spending a club on fifteen yards and a slightly narrower miss. Teeing the driver lower and swinging at eighty per cent usually achieves the same thing for free.
The gap above, to your driver
The step from your driver to your fairway wood matters less than the step below it, because both are usually tee shots and you have other ways to manage the distance. But it is worth knowing.
A 10.5-degree driver and a 15-degree 3-wood is 4.5 degrees — a clean ladder. A 10.5-degree driver and a 21-degree 7-wood is ten and a half, which is a wide gap. If that gap bothers you off the tee and you have a slot spare, a 16 to 18-degree club between them is the answer. If you do not have a slot spare, tee the fairway wood lower and take the gap.
What matters far more is whether the driver itself is right, and that is set by your speed and attack angle rather than by the clubs either side of it — what loft driver your swing speed needs .
The shaft in a fairway wood
Fairway wood shafts are the least considered shafts in the bag, and they are the ones where getting it wrong is most obvious, because the club has to be launched from the ground rather than from a tee.
Two things are worth knowing. First, a stock fairway wood shaft is usually around ten grams heavier than the stock driver shaft in the same family, and that is deliberate — the club is shorter and control matters more. Second, fairway woods are frequently sold a full flex stiffer than the golfer needs, because the shorter shaft feels softer at address than it plays.
If you can hit your driver but not your 3-wood, check the flex before you conclude it is a loft problem. An over-stiff fairway wood shaft produces exactly the low, weak flight that a lack of loft produces, and the two are easy to confuse. Work through how heavy your shaft should be for your swing speed and apply the same window plus about ten grams.
Length matters here too
Stock 3-woods run around 43 inches, which is only two and a half inches shorter than a stock driver. For a club you are trying to hit off the ground that is long, and shortening a fairway wood by half an inch is one of the cheapest strike improvements available. What to shop for
Search by loft. Fairway woods are a strong used buy: the heads are durable, the specification is stamped on the sole, and adjustable hosels on recent models give you a degree or two of latitude.
